Nurturing Your Plants with Ease
The Seed of an Idea
Little Leaf onboarding screens
Plants breathe life into our homes, but keeping them healthy can be tricky—each species has its own unique needs. Little Leaf, a mobile app, was created to help users easily care for their houseplants by offering tailored advice on watering schedules, sunlight exposure, and ideal temperatures.
Many plant lovers struggle with understanding the care requirements for their plants, leading to over- or under-watering, insufficient sunlight, or placing plants in the wrong environments. Our goal was to create a user-friendly app that provided personalized care instructions for each plant based on its type, and seamlessly fit into users' daily routines.
Cultivating Insights

Research

To design the right solution, I needed to understand the core frustrations users faced when caring for houseplants. I conducted user interviews with 15 plant owners, ranging from beginners to plant enthusiasts, to explore their pain points. We also sent out surveys to over 100 users to gather more quantitative data.
Key Findings:
Consistency
Many users struggled to remember when to water their plants or adjust them for sunlight.
Information Overload
Users found online resources overwhelming and conflicting, especially for specific plant species.
Personalization
Plant owners wanted care instructions based on their plants, not generic advice.
Sprouting Solutions

Ideation

With the research insights in mind, we brainstormed as a team to develop features and prioritize them based on user needs. Our primary goal was to create an easy-to-use interface that provided tailored care tips without overwhelming the user. We conducted brainstorming sessions where we mapped out various ideas for the app, considering core functionalities like:
Personalized plant care profiles
Users would input their plant type, and Little Leaf would generate specific instructions based on expert advice.
Smart notifications
Timely reminders would notify users when to water, adjust sunlight exposure, or check for ideal temperatures.
Visual plant library
A feature to browse different plants with care guides.
Growing the Design

Prototyping & Testing

I created low-fidelity wireframes in Figma to sketch the user flows, starting with onboarding (where users input their plant type), followed by the care profiles and notification settings. We opted for a minimalist design, keeping the interface clean to avoid overwhelming users with too much information at once.
After the initial wireframes, I conducted usability testing with five participants from our target audience. Key feedback included:
Clarity in instructions

Users wanted more specific care instructions (ex., how much water, not just "water weekly").

Notification preferences
Some users found the reminders intrusive and wanted more control over timing.
Onboarding flow
Users suggested making it easier to add multiple plants during onboarding rather than one at a time.
Based on this feedback, I refined the wireframes, added more detailed care instructions, and introduced customizable notification settings. For the onboarding flow, I enabled batch input of plants to streamline the process.
A Blossoming Solution

The Final Design

The final design of Little Leaf featured a clean, intuitive interface. Users could easily add their plants, receive personalized care instructions, and adjust their notification preferences to suit their schedules.
Each plant had its own profile with detailed care information such as optimal watering frequency, ideal sunlight exposure, and temperature range.
We also incorporated a progress tracker to help users visualize their plant care consistency, offering positive reinforcement when they followed the app's suggestions.

Design System

Nurturing Success
Upon launching Little Leaf, we saw positive responses from users. Over the first three months, we achieved:
25%
increase in plant care consistency, measured through in-app tracking of watering and sunlight adjustments.
4.7
average rating on app stores, with many users praising the ease of use and personalized care advice.
10,000
downloads within the first two months of release, exceeding our initial target.
Lessons from the Journey
Working on Little Leaf taught me the importance of balancing simplicity with functionality. One of the challenges we faced was managing the fine line between providing enough care details and overwhelming the user with too much information. In retrospect, I would involve users even earlier in the design process to gather feedback during the ideation stage.

Next time, I plan to introduce more iterative testing cycles to catch usability concerns before wireframing. The project also highlighted the importance of personalized user experiences, especially in apps that rely on user engagement over time.

Little Leaf blossomed into a successful app that provided users with the confidence to care for their plants—one notification at a time.
